Djerenka fountain is located in the Upper Bazaar. It is not known when exactly it was erected. As the legend goes: “Once upon a time, near the Cross Mosque, in a small house with a shady garden, lived a black beauty, a kara-girl, as the Turks called her. Every morning she went to a deep well, from which water was extracted with the help of a pitcher. She was spotted by the Turk Djerdjelez, who was called Đero out of mercy. “I am Đera, and she will be Djerenka!”–said Djerdjelez, meaning that he wanted to make the beautiful girl his wife. One day, while the girl was returning home carrying jugs of water, Djera snuck in and grabbed her around the waist. The girl twisted, and ran away. The disappointed man stood motionless, listening to the soft rustling of the running girl’s clothes’ fabric, while water was leaking from the broken jug. After that, Djerđelez left Vranje, and the legend of his love for a beautiful girl remained. The Turks built the fountain in the memory of unrequited love at the spring where the girl dropped the jugs of water when Djera met her.
