POPSICA

GET DIRECTIONS

Popsica Cave, 40 minutes from Niš, you reach the village of Popsica, the cave is about 2 hours walk when you come to a special cave, because it is a rare cave in the Balkans where there are currently 3 different colonies of bats. The number of people who can visit the cave at 10 at a time is limited, all the rules of speleology are respected, the cave is located just below the riding peak, 660m above sea level, the cave is about 600-700m long. There are 2 channels that connect, later one leads to the right and the other to the left. The left channel is the main one where the adventure goes, the cave ends with extensive jewelry of stalagmites and stalactites. The right canal soon narrows, but it is possible to pass there as well. The cave is one of the first caves studied, at the end of the 19th century Jovan Cvijic wrote about it, traces and evidence of life in this cave have been found since the prehistoric period.

Popsica is different from other villages, it has something special, it sounds a bit strange, but it is a swimming pool, unique in many ways.

It is a pool with clean thermal water that circulates continuously thanks to the source located in the pool, from which crystal clear water springs, 15 liters per second. The water temperature is stable throughout the year and is about 20 degrees.

The pool is surrounded by rocks and untouched nature. The idyllic atmosphere makes you feel like you are in a small oasis in the middle of nowhere.

This pool, which was built by the locals around the “Grlo” spring in 1969, has become a symbol of the village and its trademark. After the renovation in 2002, when children’s pools were built, a small bar and resorts were built and floodlights were added to the water, the pool became a real little paradise for all visitors. It became what saved this village from oblivion and brought people back to it.

Every summer, a lot of people come to Popsica to enjoy all the charms that this place offers. No buying tickets, paying for a place to sunbathe, waiting in lines, it’s just up to you to come and enjoy.

Since 2018, Popsica has got another attraction, this time it attracts people all over Europe. It is a four-day longboard camp. At that time, 40 drivers from Serbia, Bulgaria, Romania and other countries, mostly from Eastern Europe, roared on the empty roads from Svrljig to Popsica with their longboard (a longer skateboard with which higher speeds can be reached). It all ends with camping in Popšica.

This specific and unusual event, especially for a small hilly village, contributed even more to its popularization and revived it. The villagers are happy because their homeland attracts so many young people, while the festival organizers describe the locals as part of the team and those who are there to help them with anything.
